Colonoscopy For Colon

Colonoscopy is similar to sigmoidoscopy. In this the entire colon or large intestine area is observed. Like a sigmoidoscope the colonoscope is slender tube made of optical fibres which has a camera with illumination in the front. The colonoscope is inserted via the anus and is slowly pushed deeper. The doctor monitors the entire process through a TV monitor attached to the colonoscope.

You will need to have an empty bowel and have an enema before the procedure. The procedure is usually very safe and apart from the discomfort caused by having a tube inserted in your anus there is usually no side effects. For colonoscopy people are usually administered anaesthesia. You will usually wake up with minor discomfort in your anal area.

In colonoscopy the process is longer and you may need to be under watch for a few hours post the procedure. The procedure will help in detecting any abnormalities in the colon area and if there are small removable polyp then the doctor may remove it via the colonoscope.
